ROCK HILL, S.C. – In by far their closest match of the season, the College of Charleston women's tennis team dropped a tight one on the road, falling 4-3 to the Winthrop Eagles to fall to 2-2 on the year.
Mara Argyriou had the strongest day for the College, running the gambit as the only Cougar to pick up wins in both singles and doubles competition. In singles play, Argyriou grabbed a fifth-flight singles victory over Tijana Uzelac by a tally of 6-3, 6-4. Earlier in the day, the Cypriot paired up with senior Katherine Schofield against both Uzelac and Megan Kaufman, picking up the 6-3 decision. Sarah Jane Jones and Sarah Zschunke would add a 6-1 third flight doubles victory over Alice Garcia and Caitlin Cridland to give the Cougars the doubles point.
Helena Nyikos gave CofC its third point on the day, defeating Monica Aguado in sixth flight singles 6-2, 6-4. However, the Eagles won the day through their strong play at the top of the lineup.
Liza Fieldsend entered the day with a first flight singles win over Alice Garcia under her belt from the fall campaign. Winthrop dodged the matchup this time around, instead sending freshman Lauren Proctor to the flight one matchup. The affair was close, but Proctor emerged the victor 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.
Brooke McAmis also managed to give the Eagles a run for their money, squaring off against Mariana Humberg in the third flight. At the end of the day, Humberg pulled off the 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win. Katherine Schofield managed to play Garcia extremely tightly in the first set of the second flight, but fell 7-6(4). Depleted, the senior dropped the second set 6-0.
The Cougars will remain on the road, and make the short excursion north to Charlotte, where they will play the 49ers on Sunday at 10 a.m.
