MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's tennis team played a tight match with No. 40 Old Dominion, but the Monarchs proved to be too much for the Cougars, prevailing 6-1.
Old Dominion got the early advantage in doubles play, with Josh Record and Vasily Kichigin falling to Jacob Nicolussi and Jose Nunez Navarro in the third flight by a score of 6-2. The Cougars would then go on to drop 6-3 in flight two as Zack Lewis and Charlie Ghriskey were outdone by Adam Moundir and Javier Jover Maestre. With the point decided, Old Dominion carried the 1-0 edge into singles, electing not to conclude their top-flight match.
The Cougars offered spirited resistance in one-on-one action. Rodrigo Encinas scored the sole-point for the College in the first flight, knocking off Michael Weindl in two sets 7-6, 6-4.
CofC saw three flights go to three sets, though they failed to capitalize on any of them. Juan Estevarena took the first set in the top flight off of Adam Moundir 6-3, but dropped 6-3, 6-0 in the subsequent sets. After going down 6-3 in the opening set of flight three to Jover Maestre, Charlie Ghriskey earned a hard-fought 7-6 win in the second set before dropping the third 6-4. Vasily Kichigin came the closest to victory, taking the first set of flight five 6-1 over Zvonimir Podvinski, before surrendering two tough 7-5 sets.
With the loss, the College's three-match winning streak comes to an end, dropping them to 8-4 on the season. The Monarchs have proven to be capable foes for CofC, having won all three of their matchups during the Jay Bruner era, dating back to 2008.
The Cougars will get right back to it tomorrow, closing out the weekend with a home-match with CAA rival James Madison. That match is slated for Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
