Cougars Sweep James Madison, 7-0

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team swept singles and doubles to claim a 7-0 shutout of James Madison on Sunday afternoon at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
The Cougars improved to 9-4 on the season and claimed their third shutout of the season behind North Caroilna A&T on Feb. 21 and Spartanburg Methodist on Jan. 31. All but one singles match was decided in three sets.
CofC claimed the doubles point giving up only a total of four games to the Dukes at the No. 1 and No. 2 lines. The top tandem of Rodrigo Encinas and Juan Estevarena defeated Maxi Brauth and Brett Moorhead, 6-1, while Charlie Ghriskey and Zack Lewis dispatched Sebastian Salinas and Tristan Stitt on court No. 2.
Estevarena earned his 10th victory of the season at the top of the order with a straight-set decision over Sebastian Salinas, 6-1, 7-5. Encinas won his fourth-consecutive match in a three-setter against Maxi Branth, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.
Ghriskey and Garrett Gordon won at No. 4 and No. 6 singles in straight sets as did Lewis and Vasily Kichigan at No. 2 and No. 5 to seal the sweep.
“We responded well to our Saturday match today and played with energy and focus,” CofC Head Coach Jay Bruner said. “This team is just beginning to trust each other. It (three-match weekend) was a good start to the second half of the spring season for us.”
Up next, the Cougars will travel to Middle Tennessee State for a Saturday, March 19 match slated for 3 p.m. in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
