CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (4-5-2; 1-1-2) takes to the road this week to take on the No. 15 UNCW Seahawks (9-2; 4-0) at 7 p.m. in hopes of pulling off a repeat of last year's CAA first round.
The Cougars ride a two-game winning streak into Wednesday's encounter, picking up 2-1 wins over both North Florida and James Madison. Jake Nicholson claimed CAA Rookie of the Week honors after scoring three goals, including the game-winner against the Ospreys. He also fired in the cross that set up Eli Dent's game-winner against JMU with less than 20 seconds to play.
CofC and UNCW have played one another eight times since the College joined NCAA Division I back in 1991. In that time, the Seahawks have established a narrow 4-3-1 edge in the series. Last year, the Cougars tied at home in the regular season, and went on to upset UNCW in the opening round of the CAA Tournament on the road by a score of 2-1 thanks to goals from Avery Ryan and Cornell Holland. The Seahawks were receiving votes in the national polls for both matches.
UNCW has yet to lose a game in regulation this season, and are unbeaten in conference play. Their most impressive win came at the beginning of September, when they beat the then No. 3 ranked UNC Tar Heels by a score of 1-0. Phillip Goodrum (5g, 2a) is one of three Seahawks with at least four goals, while Ryan Cretens sports a 0.71 GAA and five shutouts in frame.
