Estevarena’s Big Win Not Enough to Topple Monarchs in 4-3 Loss

NORFOLK, VA. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team (13-6) had its match tied 2-2 and then again at 3-3, but the Old Dominion Monarchs (15-5) were able to escape the CofC onslaught in a 4-3 victory.

Juan Estevarena and Rodrigo Encinas continued their strong doubles play, dispatching Aziz Kijametovic and Jose Nunez Navarro 6-4 in top flight play. An ODU win on court two left the deciding match on court three, where Vasily Kichigin and Franz Sydow were narrowly surpassed by a score of 7-5 to forego the point.

The Monarchs pushed the lead to 2-0 with a win on court three, but Estevarena secured a huge 6-0, 6-2 win over Adam Moundir, the No. 37 ranked singles player in the country. Alec Angradi brought the Cougars back even at 2-2 when he dispatched Harrison Hunter in flight six action by a score of 6-1, 7-5.

Old Dominion pulled back in front with a win on court five, but Benedikt Henning came through yet again for the Cougars, pushing his unbeaten streak to 11 matches by was of a second flight 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Michael Weindl.

Unfortunately, the Cougars would come no closer, as Javier Jover Maestre pulled off the come-from-behind 5-7, 6-0, 6-0 victory over Rodrigo Encinas to seal the win.

The Cougars have one regular season match remaining on the schedule, a road showdown with Charlotte on April 15.
