CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's soccer team head to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the first time in ten years when they close out a three-game road trip with a Sunday afternoon matchup against Wake Forest.
Scouting Wake Forest
Beginning the season receiving votes in the U.S. Soccer Coaches Poll, the Demon Deacons dropped out after a season opening loss to Northwestern on the road. On Thursday evening they drew 1-1 with #13 Tennessee in their home opener in front of 912 fans. The Demon Deacons return 18 players from the 2017 roster, including four of their top-five scorers from a year ago.
Series History
The game will be the third in history and the first under head coach Christian Michner. The Demon Deacons lead the series 2-0 over Charleston.
Last Meeting with Coastal Carolina
The last time the Cougars visited Winston-Salem was Oct. 26, 1996, when the Deacons took a 3-1 overtime victory. The teams have not met since Sept. 2, 1998, a 2-0 Deacon victory in Charleston.

Last Time Out
The College got back to winning ways against Coastal Carolina in a tough road game in Conway. Sara Deutsch got the lone goal after strong work by Maddy Brill-Edwards down the right wing. Her crossed ball was met by Deutsch who scored to move Charleston to 2-1 on the young season.
Friday Night Lights
The College opened the 2018 season with a dominating display last Friday against North Florida. Alyssa Beck and Laura Ortega scored a goal in each half to get Michner's ninth season in charge started with a win. Genevieve Henderson made four saves, only one in the last 30 minutes, with the Charleston defense proving hard to crack in their home opener.
Record Hunting
CAA Preseason Co-Player of the Year Laura Ortega continues to edge closer to program history. Ortega is six goals from tying the career record of 24 set by Kristin Rhyne (2003-05) and just seven points from tying the points record (59, also set by Rhyne). Ortega is currently third in career points with 52, tied sixth in goals with 18 and is fourth all-time in assists with 16 (six from the career record).

The College has been picked to finish sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association by the league's coaches. Charleston returns 24 letterwinners, including nine starters, while adding 11 newcomers to the roster. The 2018 squad will be led by 2017 All-CAA selection Laura Ortega who led the offense last season with eight goals and five assists; good for 21 points.
