CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Gabi Bailey and
Sammy Campion recorded match-highs of 17 kills and 25 digs to lead the College of Charleston volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Montana on Sunday afternoon at TD Arena to clinch the 2021 CofC Invitational title.
The Cougars posted season-bests of 62 kills, nine blocks and a .315 hitting percentage en route to their third-straight victory and the CofC Invitational Championship. Redshirt junior
Claire Campbell was named tournament MVP after averaging 2.53 kills, 1.17 digs, 0.67 blocks and attacking at a .411 clip on the weekend. Campion also earned a spot on the all-tournament team alongside freshman setter
Jasmin Goei.
Critical Point
Trailing 12-11 in the third set, the Cougars embarked on a 7-1 run that capped by an emphatic solo block from Campbell to put Charleston ahead, 18-13. The Cougars would go on to win the set, 25-21, before clinching the match with a 25-16 victory in the fourth frame.
Key Cougars
- Bailey went on a tear from the pin with a match-high 17 kills – including 16 over the final three frames – while hitting .316 and adding seven digs and two blocks.
- Campion continued her stellar play in the back row with a match- and career-high 25 digs. The Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. tallied seven in the second and eight in the fourth while also adding three service aces.
- Lexi Wierzbicki put down 14 kills to go along with two blocks while hitting .312.
- Senior Molly Russell delivered several key plays in a nine-kill, five-block performance that saw her finish the day with an even .500 hitting percentage.
Game Notes
- Jasmin Goei and Emma Appleman dished out 27 and 23 assists, respectively, while keeping the offense humming throughout the match.
- Campbell accounted for 10 kills on 19 swings without an error and added four blocks.
- The Cougars hit over .300 in all but one set while collected at least 15 kills in each frame.
- Rebecca Olariu recorded three of the Cougars' eight service aces with one in each of the first three sets.
- Charleston held Montana to 47 kills, five blocks and a .213 hitting percentage.
