Cougars Down Indiana for Seventh Straight Victory

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. -- The College of Charleston women's tennis team (11-5, 1-0) won its seventh consecutive match on Friday, taking down the Indiana Hoosiers (7-8, 0-2) of the Big Ten at the CofC Tennis Center. It's Charleston first win over a major-conference opponent since beating Rutgers on March 6, 2016.

In Charleston's stretch of seven consecutive victories, the Cougars have scored at least five points in all seven wins. In five of those wins, the Cougars accumulated at least six points or more.

In doubles, the Cougars got out to a dominant start. Clara Errard and Kate Earnhardt won 6-0 on court two for their fifth doubles victory in their last five completed matches.

After a hard fought battle on court one, the Hoosiers earned a 6-4 win. That set up a showdown on court three with the doubles point at stake.

After a back-and-forth battle, the match was tied at 6-6 and headed to a tiebreak. Nowak and Jekauc would win the tiebreak 8-6 to clinch the doubles point and give CofC a 1-0 lead over the Hoosiers.

In singles, Indiana evened up the score with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court five. Charleston would respond with a stretch of dominance, however. The Cougars won the remaining five matches highlighted by Kate Earnhardt's 6-4, 6-1 win and Slade Coetzee's 6-4, 6-2 triumph.

"Anytime you can pick up a power-five win, it's great for our program and the conference," head coach Angelo Anastopoulo said. "It's going to be a quick recovery to turn around and play arguably the strongest program in the CAA in William & Mary tomorrow. Credit to Indiana and their fight. They have a strong team and it was certiainly to our advantage to play them outside. Coach Ramiro Azcui runs an incredible program and we were so happy to have them here. We think the world of their team."
