MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston dominated statistically, but Queens took advantage of a rare chance to hand the Cougars a 1-0 setback on Tuesday night at Ralph Lundy Field.
The loss snapped Charleston's 12-game unbeaten home streak. The Cougars were 8-0-4 at Ralph Lundy Field beginning with a 2-1 win over Winthrop on October 26, 2021 before falling to the Royals.
Charleston held a 20-4 advantage in shots and produced 12 corner kicks to none for the Royals. However, only four Cougar shots were on target, including a point-blank diving attempt by
Leonardo D'Ambrosio in front of the net with three seconds left before halftime that was saved.
Queens scored the lone goal in the 62nd minute on a header by Ciro Bourlot Jaeggi. The Cougars had five shots and four corners the rest of the way but could not come up with the equalizer. D'Ambrosio,
Ezra White and
Ethan Garvey paced Charleston with four shots each.
"A very disappointing result tonight," said head coach
Keith Wiggans. "The guys did a good job in our work rate to win the ball back when we lost possession, but again we didn't have enough quality to break them down. Queens executed their game plan of sitting in the low block and defending the box. We have to regroup for a tough conference game this weekend."
The Cougars will look to bounce back on Saturday when they host Stony Brook in a 1 p.m. match.
