College of Charleston (1-7, 1-3 Southern Conference) raced out to a quick six-point lead early in the contest before Georgia Southern (6-2, 3-0 Southern Conference) embarked on a 16-7 run on the strength of 12 straight Newton points and took a 25-19 lead with 6:28 left in the half. The Eagles led by as much as eight with 2:58 to go, but the Cougars closed the stanza on a 9-2 spurt to cut GSU's halftime advantage to 31-30.
The Eagles came out of the gate quickly in the second half, leading by as much as six before CofC cut the deficit to one at 42-41 on Patrice Bryant's layup with 11:05 left. Georgia Southern responded with a 13-4 spurt and took a 55-45 lead on Kellie Tiller's jumper with 5:54 to play. The Eagles led by as much as 14 with 2:10 to go before Rachel King's trey at the buzzer provided the final margin.
Early's career night included nine offensive rebounds and an 8-of-11 performance from the charity stripe. Early has collected 26 total rebounds and 16 offensive boards in her last two games. Newton's career-high night was aided by an 8-of-10 showing from the field, seven rebounds and a career-high four steals. Georgia Southern outrebounded Charleston 53-27 on the night.
Bryant lead the Cougars with a career-best 27 points, including 19 in the first half.
Georgia Southern returns to action on Tuesday, December 30 at East Tennessee State. College of Charleston will next see action on Saturday, January 3, hosting Western Carolina.
