On Senior Night at the College of Charleston senior Carrie Geden pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds, while Marketta Talley scored a career-high 24 points, including 17 in the second half to lead the Cougar comeback and defeat the Wofford Terriers, 58-51, in women's basketball action tonight in front of 417 fans at the John Kresse Arena.
The College of Charleston improves to 6-19 overall and 4-14 in the Southern Conference, while the Terriers, still searching for their first win of the season, drop to 0-24 and 0-17.
The Terriers built a sizable lead in the first half as the Cougars only connected on four field goals in the first 12 minutes of the half. It was a different case the final eight minutes of the half. With the score 27-11 in favor of the Terriers, the Cougars went on a 15-1 run to go into intermission down by only two, 26-28. Geden led the Cougar first-half effort with a career-high 12 rebounds as Charleston held the 26-19 advantage on the boards in the first. As a team, the Cougars shot 30.3 percent for the, while the Terriers had 33.3.
The second half saw both teams trade leads several times. With the score tied at 44-44 with 6:10 left to play, the Cougars started a 10-3 run over the next five minutes that saw Charleston take the 54-47 lead with 47.8 seconds left. A free-throw by Jenny Weurding would end the Terrier drought to take the score to 54-48. Clutch free-throw shooting by the Cougars at the end would seal the comeback Cougar victory with the final score 58-51.
Geden picked up her third career double-double with her 17 rebounds and 10 points, while Rachel King tied her career-best with nine assists. Wofford's Susanna Paul gave the Terriers their first double-double of the season with her 11 points and 11 rebounds. Jenny Weurding, sister of CofC men's basketball palyer Joe Weurding, picked up two blocks tonight and is now just three shy of setting the Wofford single-season record of 59. Four freshman started tonight for Wofford, marking the first time this has happened this season. The Cougars shot 36.1 percent from the field for the game whle the Terriers shot 30.6. Charleston held the 47-42 rebounding edge but had one more turnover, 19-18.
The College of Charleston travels to Appalachian State Feb. 21st to take on the Mountaineers in a 1:00 PM contest, while the Terriers host Davidson in a 3:00 PM match-up the same day.
