Appalachian State scored half-way through the second half and forced two overtimes that resulted in a 1-1 tie with the College of Charleston women's soccer team this afternoon in front of 184 fans in Boone, N.C.
The College of Charleston goes to 3-5-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the SoCon, while Appalachian State goes to 9-3-1 and 2-2-1.
Teryn Schuetz set up the Cougars' goal with a shot of her own that was deflected by the Appalachian State goalkeeper to the feet of Carolyn Morris, who sent it sailing into the back of the net at 19:54.
In the second half Mountaineer Dana Murphy shot one into the top of the goal from about 15 yards out to tie the game up at 73:33.
With three minutes remaining in regulation, CofC?s Kristin Rhyne had what appeared to be an uncontested shot from 10 yards out on the nearside. However, after she struck the ball, ASU defender Suzanne Fossum made a great play, as she came from seven yards away to throw her right foot in front of the ball to successfully deflect the shot. The Cougars tested the ASU defense, firing off two more shots, both of which were successfully defended, before time expired in regulation.
The Cougars nearly ended the match four minutes into the first overtime as Colleen Hoban?s shot hit the crossbar and bounced back into the box where Katie Brown kicked the open-net shot high. Appalachian had its opportunity two minutes later, but CofC netminder Erin Smith successfully stopped Jaclyn Hoffman?s (Boca Raton, Fla,/Olympic Heights) shot.
Both teams had several opportunities to score with the shot total coming out to 26-21 in favor of Appalachian State. This included seven total shots in overtime for both teams. Erin Smith held the saves mark over Moutaineer Megan Amorosi in saves 7-3. Krisitn Rhyne paced the Cougars with seven shots, while Whitney Southard led Appalachian State with six shots in the contest.
