CofC Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker To Davidson, 1-0

Suzanne Sittko's goal with less than seven minutes left in the match lifted Davidson to victory over the College of Charleston in women's soccer action, 1-0, at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. on Thursday night.
With the victory, Davidson's record improves to 8-6-2 overall and 4-3-0 in SoCon matches this season. The loss drops CofC to 6-7-2 overall and 4-3-0 in the SoCon.
Freshman Chrissy Caruso had a prime scoring opportunity in the 32nd minute when her shot went past the Davidson goalkeeper, but slid wide of the net and grazed the goalpost.
The first half was scoreless with both Davidson and Charleston attempting five shots. Davidson took two corner kicks, while the Cougars attempted none.
Both teams increased their offensive attacks in the second half and had numerous scoring chances. CofC's best opportunity took place late in the half, when senior Caroline Wertis lifted a wide-open shot from the penalty area with less than 11 minutes left in the game over the goal.
Sittko's goal came courtesy of a crossing pass from teammate Nelly Meeks to give Davidson the lead it would not relinquish.
Erin Smith had nine saves for CofC, while Bevin English had four saves for Davidson in the victory.
In the entire match, CofC attempted 10 shots and one corner kick, while Davidson took 13 shots and three corner kicks.
The Cougars return to action on Oct. 22, when they host SoCon foe Chattanooga at Patriots Point. The match begins at 1 p.m.
