Three Cougars scored in double-figures, including 16 points from Jill Furstenburg, but it would not be enough as the College of Charleston women's basketball team fell to the Davidson Wildcats, 58-48, in front of 431 fans at the John Kresse Arena.
Charleston falls to 5-7 overall and 2-1 in the Southern Conference, while Davidson wins its ninth straight and goes to 12-2 and 3-0 in the league.
The Cougars led 12-9 with 13:26 to go in the first half before the Wildcats went on a 12-1 run over the next nine minutes to take the 21-13 lead with just under five minutes before intermission. Charleston would make just one more basket in the first half, with the rest of the points coming off of free throws, to go into the locker room down 26-18.
Danielle Hemerka, who posted five points during that run, had 11 points in the first half to lead both squads. Jill Furstenburg totaled six to lead the Cougars. Charleston shot 36.8 percent from the field and was held scoreless from behind the three-point arc. Davidson shot just 31.0 percent in the half but was three-for-seven in three-pointers. The difference in the half was the 18-7 advantage in points off of turnovers for the Wildcats, as the Cougars had 16 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, compared to 11 for Davidson.
The Cougars improved their shooting percentage in the second half, putting up a 42.9 percentage but so did the Wildcats, hitting 53.8 percent from the field. Davidson was able to keep the margin in double-figures for much of the game, as the Wildcats seemed to have an answer for everything the Cougars tried and took the eventual 58-48 win.
For the game the Cougars were just eight-for-19 from the charity stripe, while the Wildcats were nine-for-15. Charleston also struggled from long range, hitting just two-of-14 from beyond the three-point arc; Davidson was three-for-eight. Davidson controlled the paint with the 32-18 advantage. The Wildcats dominated the boards, 42-19 and had one more turnover, 23-22. Charleston ended the game with a 40.4 field goal percentage, while Davidson ended with 41.8.
Furstenburg led the Cougars with her 16 points, with Ashley Scott following with her career-high 12 points. Erika Smith posted 11 for the Cougars as well as nine rebounds to pace the team.
Davidson was led by Hemerka, with her 17 points and 14 rebounds for the double-double. Tia Washington followed with 12 points for the Wildcats.
