
Paladins Edge Cougars, 55-53

The College of Charleston women's basketball team fought back from a six-point deficit with a minute-and-a-half to go and cut the margin to two with 30 seconds left but could not get any further and fell to the Furman Paladins, 55-53, in front of 1,126 kids and fans as part of “Education Day” at the John Kresse Arena.
Charleston drops its fourth straight to go to 10-14 overall and 5-8 in the Southern Conference. Furman improves to 8-16 and 3-10 in the league. Children from Charleston, Dorchester and Berkley County Schools were in attendance for the game.
Neither team could take a commanding lead in the first half. Furman led by five with 12:22 to go in the half, 11-6, before the Cougars used a small 8-0 run to take the three-point 14-11 lead with 9:24 to go. Charleston would hold the slim lead the remainder of the half and went into the locker room ahead 24-21.
Furman shot 32.0 percent from the field in the first half, while the Cougars shot 36.7.
The Paladins hung with the Cougars to start the second half, keeping the margin under five until taking the lead for good at the 13:51 mark, 31-30, off a jumper by Courtney Opie. The margin stayed close for much of the remainder of the game but Furman was eventually able to take the lead to seven, 53-46, with three minutes to play. Charleston fought back with a 7-2 run over the remainder of the game to pull within two with just 27 to go but could get no further and fell to the eventual 55-53 score.
The Cougars shot 40.0 percent in the second half to finish with 38.3 for the game. The Paladins shot 42.3 percent in the second half for 37.3 for the game. Furman out-rebounded the Cougars 39-34, and had more turnovers, 19-15. Charleston did have a season-high 10 blocks, with Erika Smith leading with four.
Smith led the Cougars in scoring with 14, while Jade Hughes followed with 12. Ashley Scott tied her career-high with her team-leading seven rebounds.
Kali Holtfreter led the Paladins with 14 points. Jessica Lange paced the team with her 13 rebounds to go with her 13 points.
Charleston travels to Elon Saturday, Feb. 10th for a 7:00 p.m tip with the Phoenix. Furman is at Wofford the same day at 6:00 p.m.
