Former College of Charleston standout centerfielder Brett Gardner has been promoted to the New York Yankees' Triple-A affiliate Scranton-Wilkes Barre of the International League.
Gardner was promoted from Double-A Trenton on Thursday. In 54 games with the Thunder this year, Gardner batted .300 (61-203) with 19 extra-base hits, 17 RBI and 18 stolen bases in 22 attempts. He has been especially hot of late, batting .372 in 31 games since June 1. In 2006, in 118 games between Class-A Tampa and Trenton, Gardner swiped 58 bases
Gardner didn't record a hit in his first career Triple-A game on Thursday, but he made his presence felt in other ways, drawing a pair of walks, scoring two runs and stealing a base in the Scranton's 9-6 win at Louisville.
Gardner, who was a third round pick by the Yankees in 2005, helped the Cougars to a 48-15 overall record and a 27-3 Southern Conference mark as a senior in 2005. Both victory totals are school and league records.
Gardner, who led Charleston to its first two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2004 and 2005, earned first team All-American honors in 2005 after hitting .447 with two homers and 48 RBI. He set school and SoCon single-records by scoring 85 runs and banging out 122 hits. The Cougars earned a number two seed in the Clemson Regional.
In 2004, Gardner hit .397 with four homers, 22 stolen bases, 57 runs and 51 RBI over 60 games. He helped the Cougars to a 47-16 overall record and a 25-5 league mark. The Cougars finished runner-up in the LSU regional losing to eventual College World Series participant LSU in the finals.
For his Cougar career, the Holly Hill, S.C. native played in 217 games and sported a .368 batting average (297-for-808) with 42 doubles, 16 triples, eight homers, 214 runs scored and 141 RBI. Gardner stole a school-record 97 bases in 117 career attempts.
