
Cougars End in Tie with Stanford, 0-0

After regulation and two, 10 minute over time periods, the College of Charleston men's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with the Stanford Cardinal under the lights on a 55-degree night.
The match, the first tie for the Cougars, brings their record to 6-1-1. The Cardinal now have a record of 3-2-2.
The physical game was dominated by defense. There was a combined total of 30 fouls and three cautions.
In the 20th minute, midfielder Wes Knight passed a ball from the left side in to Grant Guthrie. Guthrie took a shot from 15 yards out, placing it just wide of the net. Branko Gavric's shot in the 35th minute from the middle of the penalty box deflected off a Cardinal defender resulting in a corner kick for the Cougars.
At the end of the first half, the Cardinal held a 7-4 shot advantage over CofC and six corner kicks to the Cougars' one. Justin Fojo, Kareem Yearwood, Knight and Gavric each took one shot.
CofC added five more shots and Stanford added seven in the second half. The teams left the second half still tied at zero.
The Cougars' best opportunity to score came in the first overtime when Jake Helmig caught Kartunen off his post. He booted the ball from the center of the penalty box but Kartunen dove back to make the save.
CofC goalie Corbin Waller made nine saves on the evening, Kartunen logged two.
The Cougars continue their west coast road trip when the head to San Jose State to take on the Spartans Sunday at 1. The team returns home to host Winthrop Wed., Oct. 3, at 6.
