
Cougars Shut Out by Spartans, 4-0

San Jose, Calif. -- Nick Cukar, Ismael Ibarra and Julio Gonzalez scored four times on Corbin Waller to lift the San Jose State Spartans to a 4-0 win over the College of Charleston men's soccer team in the Cougars' last game of a two-game, west coast road trip.
SJSU of the Western Athletic Conference improve to 5-4-0, while the Cougars fall to 6-2-1.
Despite an 11-7 shot advantage, the Cougars ended the first half down 1-0.
Spartan midfielder Cukar deflected a pass from Ibarra from the right side to find the goal for the game-winning goal (4:50).
In the 33rd minute, forward Kareem Yearwood sent a ball directed for the goal. Defender Oscar Monjaras cleared it at the last minute for a team save.
Yearwood and forward Zach Prince attacked the Spartans'goal, firing two shots a piece in rapid succession. Prince's first shot was punched out by SJSU goalie Lewis Sweeney. He rebounded and sent another shot that was stopped just shy of the goal and cleared by the Spartan defense. Yearwood collected Prince's shot and booted two balls toward the goal. The second shot sailed just high of the cross bar for an SJSU goal kick.
The remaining three goals came in the second period for the Spartans. Ibarra shot from the top of the penalty box in the 55th minute off an assist from Savio Carrijo.
Cukar added his second goal of the game and fourth for the season after Ibarra crossed the ball to bring the score to 3-0, SJSU.
The final goal of the match came when Sam Shore served the ball up to Gonzalez who took it down the middle of the field for the score.
The Cougars' defense led by Doug Edwards and Ryan Kell held the Spartans to 20 shots, while Prince and Yearwood led CofC in its 21 shots.
The Cougars return home to host the Winthrop Eagles Wed., Oct. 4 at 6 at Patriots Point.
