CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston's women's soccer team battled cross-town rival Charleston Southern to a 2-2, double-overtime draw in the annual Silver Cup match on Monday afternoon.
With the tie, the Cougars record is now 7-1-1 on the year, while Charleston Southern goes to 3-4-1.
In the first half, both teams went scoreless despite the fact that Charleston Southern had several opportunities to score throughout the period. The Cougar defense and goalie Erin Smith stopped each attempt by the Lady Bucs.
In the second half, Charleston Southern broke the scoreless tie roughly four minutes into the period when Michelle Dennis scored unassisted.
The Cougars, however, would come storming back and scored back-to-back goals in a matter of minutes to take a 2-1 lead.
First, Megan Manthey scored her sixth goal of the season on a shot from the far side that bounced off the crossbar and into the goal.
Three minutes later, Hope Atkinson scored her third goal of the season after taking a shot from just outside the box and having it hit off the top crossbar and into the net.
Charleston Southern, however, answered when Emma Mattsson scored with 13 minutes left in regulation off an assist from Sara Catenacci. The game remained tied throughout the end of regulation and was forced to go to overtime.
In the overtime periods, both teams had several opportunities to take control of the match, but both squads were unable to score a goal
The Cougars will return to action on Friday, September 26 when they open Southern Conference play hosting Appalachian State at Patriots Point. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
