Jade Hughes (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored 19 points for the second straight game, while Deidra Jones (Irmo, S.C.) added 13, as the College of Charleston women's basketball team survived a late second-half Terrier rally and defeated Wofford, 64-57, in action this afternoon at the Benjamin Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, S.C.
Charleston wins its third straight and improves to 11-5 overall and 5-4 in the Southern Conference. Wofford falls to 3-13 and 1-7 in the league.
Charleston led by as many as 13 in the second half and were leading by 12, 48-36, with 12:01 remaining when the Terriers posted seven unanswered points to cut the margin to five, 48-43, with 9:43 to go. The Cougars held off, using two clutch three-pointers by Hughes, to take the margin back to double-figures and led 59-49 at the 3:10 mark. Wofford wasn't done yet as Kelly Dwyer scored five straight to cut the deficit to six with just under 10 seconds left. There wasn't enough time on the clock for any more comeback, thought, as the Cougars took the seven-point 64-57 win.
The first half saw both teams play well offensively, with the Cougars shooting 42.4 percent from the field, the Terriers 50.0 percent. Wofford led by five early but it was the Cougars who came way with the largest margin the half, a six-point 36-30 halftime lead.
Charleston finished the game shooting 39.4 percent. Wofford finished with 38.3. The Cougars out-rebounded the Terriers, 44-37, and had two less turnovers, 22-20. Charleston was 13-for-17 from the free throw line and five-for-12 from beyond the three-point arc, Hughes leading the way with a three-for-four effort. Wofford was eight-for-14 from the charity stripe and three-for-17 in three-pointers.
Nikki Williams (North, S.C.) led the Cougars in rebounds with 11, and was just a point short of a double-double with nine points..
Dwyer led the Terriers with 13 points and five rebounds.
Charleston hosts Georgia Southern, Monday, Jan. 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Carolina First Arena in its next game.
