Martha Hall scored in the 62nd minute to break a scoreless tie and lead the Furman Paladins to the 1-0 win over the College of Charleston women's soccer team in action Oct. 4 in Greenville, S.C.
The Cougars, who had won five straight entering the game, fell to 7-4-1 and 3-1 in the Southern Conference. Furman improved to 8-3-0 and 2-2 in the league.
After playing scoreless for over an hour, Furman broke the deadlock at 61:06 with the lone goal of the match. Graham Marchman played a pass to Hall at the top of the box and Hall laced a shot past a diving Katie Tate (Woodmont, S.C.) and into the right hand corner.
The Paladin defense had to turn away several Cougar attacks over the final 25 minutes, including a leaping effort by Smith to push Julie Romanik's (Millville, N.J.) long range shot over the crossbar with just under 15 minutes remaining. Smith finished with three saves while Tate had two.
Furman held an 11-8 edge in shot attempts with both teams registering three shots on goal. Charleston had five saves, compared to four for Furman.
The Cougars travel to Davidson, N.C., Oct. 8 for a 7 p.m. match against the WIldcats.
