
Samford Uses Second Half Surge to knock off CofC, 61-41

Emily London scored a game-high 16 points, as Samford used a strong offensive second half performance to pull away from the College of Charleston, 61-41 in Southern Conference Women's Basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center
With the loss, the Cougars fell to 17-6 on the year, 10-5 in the Southern Conference, while Samford improved to 18-4, 13-2 in the SoCon with the win.
In the first half, both teams used strong defensive efforts, as Samford held on to a 26-25 lead at intermission. Deidra Jones (Irmo, S.C.) led all Charleston scorers with six points, while London was the period's leading scorer with nine points.
In the second half, the game was played at a similar pace for the first eight minutes, as Samford held a 32-31 lead at the 12-minute mark. It was from there that the Bulldogs controlled the period, as they went on a 15-5 run over the next six and a half minutes to take an 44-36 lead.
Samford would eventually extend the lead to 14 points at the four-minute mark, which was an insurmountable for the Cougars to come back from, as the Bulldogs outscored the Cougars 36-17 in the half to pull away.
For the game, Maxwell scored 16 points on 4-5 shooting from the three-point line, while Savannah Hill added 16 points. For the Cougars, Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) was the leading scorer with 10 points, while Nikki Williams (North, S.C.) added nine points and pulled down nine rebounds.
The College of Charleston women's basketball team returns to action on Monday, Feb, 9th, when they continue their road trip at Chattanooga. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
