
Furman ends CofC's Season with 6-5 Victory in SoCon Championship

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Marcus Rose went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead Furman to a 6-5 win over the College of Charleston in Southern Conference Tournament action in front of 1,052 at Fluor Field on Thursday.
With the loss, Charleston was eliminated from the SoCon Championship, ending their season with a 35-22 record. Furman improved to 23-30 with the win.
After playing scoreless baseball for two and a half innings, Furman got on the board in the bottom of the third as Will Miller hit a solo home run over the left field wall, then Rose smashed a two-run homer over the left center field wall, making the score 3-0.
In the top of the fourth, the Cougars got on the scoreboard when Ryan Daniels (Victoria, Texas) laced an RBI single to right field, scoring Brandon Sizemore (Jacksonville, Fla.). Charleston, however, left the bases loaded in the inning, as Furman pitcher Barry Benton forced Cole Rakar to fly out right field to end the threat.
Furman answered with two runs off their own in the bottom of the fourth, as Campbell Lewis hit an RBI double, then J.B. Jenkins added an RBI double of his own making the score 5-1.
The Cougars then knotted the game up at five after scoring four runs in the top of the fifth, as Daniels had a two RBI double and Sizemore recorded an RBI after forcing a walk. Clay McCord (Atlanta, Ga.) also scored in the inning on a balk.
Furman broke the 5-5 tie in the bottom half of the inning, as Rose scored from third on a passed ball. The run proved to be the eventual game-winner, as the Paladin bullpen held the Cougars scoreless over the final four innings to claim the victory.
For Furman, Miller and Jenkins each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Matt Hemmingway went 2-for-3 with a run scored. On the mound, pitcher Bobby Lyne earned the win (2-3) after throwing four shutout innings of relief, while giving up a hit on three strikeouts. Nick Karow (4) earned the save for the Paladins after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
For Charleston, Daniels was 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Sizemore went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Curtis Dowling (Columbia, S.C., 1-2) was the hard-luck loser for the Cougars after allowing an unearned run on four hits in four innings of work.
