MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Freshman Alyssa Bearden (Cary, N.C.) scored her second game-winning goal in as many games to lift the College of Charleston women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Samford on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, the Cougars improved to 6-3-1, 2-0 in the Southern Conference, while Samford fell to 6-1-1, 1-1 in the SoCon. Charleston returns to the pitch on Friday, Oct. 2nd when they visit Wofford. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
"We couldn't be more proud of our team's performance today against a very solid Samford team," said head coach Kevin Dempsey. "I really thought in the last 15 minutes we took control of the match and never looked back. We're also happy with the depth we showed and the overall quality we played at. This has to be one of the bigger conference victories we've ever had."
In the first half, Charleston was aggressive on the offensive end the entire period, taking a total of 10 shots, (nine of which were on goal). Samford goalie Alyssa Whitehead, however, made nine saves in the period to stop the Cougars from registering a score.
In the second half, Bearden scored her golden goal in the 54th minute at the top of the box from 15 yards out. The goal was the third for Bearden in as many matches and was also the first goal Samford had given up on the 2009 season.
From there, the Cougars controlled the pace of the match, as freshman goal keeper Katie Tate earned the first shutout victory of her collegiate career.
Overall, the Cougars outshot the Bulldogs 14-6 and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
