
Cougars Step Out of Conference, Host UNC Pembroke

The College of Charleston women's basketball team steps out of Southern Conference play with a 7 p.m. matchup against UNC Pembroke at the Carolina First Arena Wednesday, Dec. 1. The Cougars and Braves have met just three times in their history and not since Nov. 27, 1987 when UNC Pembroke defeated Charleston, 74-72. Charleston is 2-1 against UNCP overall.
Charleston (2-5) is coming off a 56-61 loss at Furman Monday night. The Paladins led by as much as 10 in the second half before the Cougars rallied to cut the margin to three late. Free throws by Furman down the stretch kept Charleston from getting any closer. Janae Smith (Matteson, Ill.) came alive during the game, posting a career-high 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Cougars. The Cougars turned the ball over a season-low 14 times against the Paladins.
Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.), with a basket at the 10:33 mark in the first half at Furman, became the ninth player in Charleston's Division I history and 24th overall to reach 1,000 career points. She now has 1,010 and is just 22 points from moving to eighth among the CofC Division I scoring leaders.
Gerty leads the Cougars so far this season in scoring with 11.4 points per game, while Smith follows with 6.5. Deidre Ramer (Franklin, Tenn.) is averaging a team-leading 6.1 rebounds. Charleston is averaging 48.1 points and 37.3 rebounds per game.
UNC Pembroke is 3-1 overall and is coming off a 71-51 win at Fayetteville State Nov. 27. JaToya Kemp leads the Braves with 11.5 points a game while Briana Stanton follows with 10.0 points, along with her team-leading 6.8 rebounds. The Braves are averaging 68.2 points and 46.8 rebounds per game.
