MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's soccer team dominated Presbyterian in the closing match of The College of Charleston Tournament at Patriots Point on Sunday afternoon.
The win improves the Cougars' season record to 3-4-0. Presbyterian falls to 1-5-0.
The Cougars dominated virtually all facets of the game and maintained possession for a vast majority of the contest. The Cougars posted 24 shot attempts and put 16 on goal.
"It was a really great day for the Cougars," said head coach Christian Michner. "We were able to create a lot of dangerous scoring opportunities and were fortunate to have the composure in front of goal to finish on several of those chances."
Sarah Schaidle (Simpsonville, S.C.) got CofC started early with the opening goal in the third minute. McCallie Jones (Charlotte, N.C.) got a throw deep into the box by way of a crowd-exciting summersault throw in. Schaidle possessed the ball and fired into the keeper before Annie Pease (Marietta, Ga.) gained the rebound and got the ball back to Schaidle who capitalized on her second attempt.
Jones executed another flip-throw in the 18th minute and Pease flicked a header to the far side of the box where a wide-open Maryam Buazza (Katy, Texas) controlled the ball and booted it into the open net for her fourth goal of the season.
PC countered just 50 seconds later with a goal from Stephanie Aaron to cut the score to 2-1. Tori Lopez gained an assist on the play.
The Cougars regrouped after allowing the goal and continued to dominate possession. Megan Hilbert (Apex, N.C.) then extended the lead back to two goals in the 38th minute. Hilbert made a long run down the left-hand side of the field before chipping the ball over the charging keeper.
The Cougars went into the locker room at the half leading 3-1 on the scoreboard and 13-1 in shots.
The Cougars remained aggressive in the opening minutes of the second half. The Blue Hose were pinned deep in their own end and tried to clear the ball out but Sloane Levin (Hamburg, Mich.) intercepted the attempt and fired a perfect shot into the upper corner of the goal in the 48th minute.
Just 76 seconds of clock time later, Levin controlled a botched punt off the PC keeper's boat and struck again in a virtually-identical fashion to move the score to 5-1.
After Levin's pair of quick goals, the Cougars were contempt with controlling the ball in the middle third of the field for much of the second half.
CofC then capitalized again on a set piece from the corner in the 76th minute. Morgan Benz (Clifton, Va.) sent the ball into the box where Kelly Gautreaux (Mandeville, La.) headed the ball into the open net.
At the conclusion of the game, Benz, Schaidle and Hope Atkinson (Rumson, N.J.) were named to the eleven-member all-tournament team.
"I was really impressed by our commitment to focus on our game over the entire 90 minutes," said Michner. "This team is ready for the road ahead." Congratulations to Morgan, Hope and Sarah for being named to the all-tournament team, a well-deserved honor."
The Cougars will now take to the road to face Georgia on Friday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
