
Cougars Face Mountaineers Wednesday

The College of Charleston women's basketball team will try to snap a four-game skid with a Wednesday game at Appalachian State. The Jan. 5th game tips off at 7 p.m. Charleston has not lost five games in a row since the 2006-07 seaosn.
Appalachian State and the College of Charleston are knotted up 16-16 in the overall series. Before last season the Cougars had won six of seven match ups. The Mountaineers owned the series in 2009-10, taking all three games, including a 77-58 decision in the semifinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational.
The Cougars, 4-9 overall and 1-3 in the Southern Conference, are led by Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) with 11.1 points per game, followed by Janae Smith (Matteson, Ill.) with 8.9 a game. Latisha Harris (Aynor, S.C.) paces the team in rebounds with 5.1 a game.
Appalachian State is 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the Southern Conference and has won its last two in a row, including a 64-57 decision at Wake Forest Dec. 29. The Mountaineers are led by Sam Ramirez with 17.1 points a game. Ashlen Dewart follows with 15.8. Anna Freeman is tops for Appalachian State in rebounds with 6.4 a game.
The Cougars have lost their last four in a row. They have not lost five in a row since dropping their last 10 in 2006-07. Appalachian State is on a two-game skid and has not lost three in a row since early January of last year. During the stretch the Cougars have shot just 31.8 percent and are being outscored by 19.0 points. On a positive side, Charleston is averaging 42.5 rebounds a game, compared to 39.8 for the opposition.
Charleston is 2-5 on the road so far this year. The Cougars have been outscored 51.9-66.6 and have been out-rebounded 46.3-40.6.
In the four games won by the Cougars this season, they have shot better (.369-.343) and rebounds are fairly even with Charleston holding a slight 37.8-37.5 advantage. Charleston has just a few less turnovers, 82-89, and a few more steals, 43-34. The games have been tight, with the point differential only 4.3.
Charleston has lost its nine games this season by a margin of 18.0 points and have been out-rebounded 40.2-42.3. CofC has been getting more second chances, holding a 135-126 edge in offensive boards.
The fifth of six road games for the Cougars is against Western Carolina Jan. 8 at 2 p.m.
