Cougars Overcome Rain and Indoor Conditions at ECU Fall Shootout

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Rain hampered the College of Charleston men's tennis team's fall season opener at the three-day ECU Fall Shootout hosted by East Carolina at the River Burch Tennis Center.
Play was forced indoors for the majority of the weekend creating faster conditions for the Cougars and a shortened tournament schedule. However, they were able to adjust and won four of the eight singles flights on Friday and two of the four doubles flights on Sunday against James Madison. CofC would also claim five of eight singles matches versus host ECU on Saturday and two of three doubles matches against Richmond on Sunday.
"Despite the rain and playing indoors, it was a good first tournament of the year for us," CofC Head Coach Jay Bruner said. "We played late on the first night until 11 p.m. and weren't able to complete some of the singles and doubles matches as scheduled. But, we still got some play in against opponents from different conferences and the newcomers did well in their first tournament."
In his CofC debut, sophomore Crescente Lesser (Santiago, Chile), a transfer from Longwood University, won Flight C singles with a perfect 2-0 record, while junior Billy Kenny (Pawley's Island, S.C.) and senior Chris Toussaint (Charlotte, N.C.) were victorious in Flight D doubles winning a close tiebreaker in a 9-8 (5) victory over Jovan Milic and Bastien Russo of JMU. Lesser defeated Bertrand Moulin of JMU in a third-set super tiebreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (3), and John Schmitt of ECU, 7-5, 6-2.
Sophomore newcomer Brice Allanic (Colombes, France) also went an undefeated 2-0 in his Cougar debut beating Florent Sentenac of JMU in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, and Niels Cleeren of ECU in a third-set super tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (12), in Flight E singles. Allanic is a transfer from the Université d'Angers.
The Cougars will return to fall tournament action at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships hosted by North Carolina on Oct. 13-17 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
