BOONE, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team was bested by a 2-1 count in an overtime match on Sunday afternoon. CofC vastly controlled the possession and pace of play, but the Cougars couldn't finish enough of the chances they created in the eventual loss.
CofC (5-11-1, 4-5-1 SoCon) outshot the Mountaineers, 24-13, and put eight shots on target compared to four ASU.
“We played well and created chance after chance to put the game away and just couldn't find the finishing touch,” said head coach Christian Michner. “In games like these, it requires that little bit of quality to finish the chances you create and we lacked that today.
“App. played hard and didn't make it easy and it's a tough pill to swallow losing in that fashion. We will have to regroup and be ready to face a tough Citadel team on Wednesday. We are excited for the opportunity to compete together again and will be ready.”
The match saw the Cougars make an early push and take the first four shot attempts of the match and earn a corner in the opening minute, but neither team would score in an opening period in which CofC produced a 7-2 shot advantage.
ASU opened the scoring in the 55th minute when Julia Holz collected a ball from Meggie Graham and got the ball over the head of Cougar keeper Eli Sarasola (San Sebastian, Spain) who returned from injury and made two saves in the match.
CofC had an answer in the 66th minute when Sarah Schaidle (Simpsonville, S.C.) drove the ball over the head of the ASU keeper and into the back of the net for the equalizer and her third of the season.
CofC dictated the remainder of regulation but left its chances empty so the match became the third of the season and second consecutively to require overtime.
Though the Cougars outshot the Mountaineers 5-2 in the overtime periods, ASU was side to produce the game winner when Graham and Holz once again coming up with the goal combination. This time, Holz slid the ball to Graham just aside the box and as Sarasola came off her line to stifle the play, Graham chipped the ball over her head and into the net for the 107th minute game winner.
CofC concludes the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 24 in a match which – depending on other results around the league – could determine which team gets the eighth and final seed for the SoCon Tournament. The Cougars host this edition of the crosstown rivalry at Patriots Point at 7 p.m.
