DAVIDSON, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team fell victim to five unanswered goals in a 5-2 loss at Davidson in Southern Conference play on Sunday afternoon. CofC sparked an impressive start and produced a 2-0 lead before Davidson's comeback effort.
“We had the run of play in the first half and opened really well, but then the wheels came off,” said head coach Christian Michner. “They came out in the second half and applied great pressure. What teams look to avoid doing is giving up goals at the end or the beginning of a half, and we did both. We were scrambling from there and never regrouped.
“We had a hard time getting hold of the ball in the second half, but when we did we created chances but credit goes to them for doing what they had to do defensively. We learned our lesson today; soccer is a 90-minute match.”
The Cougars (3-9-1, 2-3-1 SoCon) throttled the Wildcats early, creating the first four corner kicks of the game and converting on two to build an early 2-0 lead.
Just 1:23 into the match, Sarah Cardamone (Downingtown, Pa.) sent the match's first corner into the box and Jade Reynolds (Oxon, England) got her head to the ball and knocked it just under the crossbar to give the Cougars the early lead.
The Cougars replicated the effort in the 26th minute when Kate Twohig (Charleston, S.C.) sent a corner into the box and McCallie Jones (Charlotte, N.C.) volleyed it home to give CofC the 2-0 lead.
At that point, the Cougars led 7-1 in shots after an electric start but Davidson adjusted and began to reinsert itself into the remainder of the match.
The Wildcats broke through on a corner kick of their own just before halftime with Julia Singley's third goal of the season.
The Cougars would take the 2-1 lead into the locker room after outshooting the Wildcats, 8-4, in the opening half.
The second half would belong to the Wildcats, however, and they demonstrated it right away by converting on a penalty kick just 1:11 into the period to equalize the match.
The Wildcats would then seize the lead in the 62nd minute when Stephanie Piperno sent a cross into the box and Singley tucked it inside the near post for her second goal of the match and a 3-2 Davidson lead.
Singley and Piperno would reverse roles in the 74th minute when Singley sent a cross into the box from the far side and Piperno played it across the goal mouth into the side netting.
Singley picked up her sixth point of the match with another centering feed which Kelsey Krueger headed home for Davidson's fifth unanswered goal in the 88th minute.
The Cougars will have to regroup for two more SoCon matches next weekend when they return to Patriots Point to host Chattanooga and Samford. CofC will first see Chattanooga on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
