HARRISONBURG, Va. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association competition at University Park on Sunday afternoon.
CofC (2-13, 0-6 CAA) played well in an end-to-end opening half and headed into the break tied 0-0, but possession became harder to come by as the game wore in. The Dukes netted three goals in the second half to claim the result, two separated by 2:02 around the 64th minute and the third in the 89th minute moments before time expired.
“JMU is the probably the most complete team we've played in the conference this season,” said head coach Christian Michner. “They're extremely well coached and just perennially a dominant team. We were a step away on every play today. We created some great chances and got behind them and really should have put the ball away and missed those opportunities. Certainly, at this level you're going to pay for it.”
After the intermission, JMU's Lauren Wilson scored back-to-back goals in the 63rd and 65th minute with assists by Becky Sparks and Sam Lofton.
Moments after Wilson's second goal, McCallie Jones (Charlotte, N.C.) looked to get the Cougars back in the game but her shot caromed off the crossbar and directly down to the goal line where it spun sporadically but somehow failed to cross the goal line.
After the teams exchanged fruitless chances over the next 30 minutes or so, the Dukes tucked in one more goal in the 89th minute. Sydney Braun-Mcleoud came away with a ball after a scramble in front of the net and scored to push the result to 3-0.
The match was the Cougars' final road game of the season as they return home for the final two matches of the regular season. CofC hosts Delaware on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. and wraps up the schedule against Drexel on Sunday, Oct. 27.
