CofC Volleyball Sweeps William & Mary, 3-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The College of Charleston stayed undefeated in CAA play and took a 3-0 sweep (25-10, 25-16, 25-20) over The College of William & Mary on Saturday night from Kaplan Arena.

With The College facing off against The College, South Carolina's oldest institution of higher learning bested its peer from Virginia in a battle of schools chartered before the American Revolution, giving true meaning to a Colonial matchup.

The Cougars (14-4, 4-0) held the Tribe (6-13, 1-2) to just .018 hitting as Charleston made 62 digs, a new season high for three sets this year. The Cougars are the only undefeated team in the CAA through two weekends.

Darcy Dorton led CofC with 12 kills and 14 digs for her third double-double in four conference matches, hitting .423 with just one error. She has now averaged 15.25 kills and 13.5 digs per CAA match. Melissa Morello tallied 10 kills and seven digs, while Cara Howley rifled eight kills.

Andi Zbojniewicz finished with 15 digs, and Taeler Davis had a double-double with 20 assists and 10 digs.

Kristen Larrick was William & Mary's leading scorer with six kills, while three different players had nine kills.

The Cougars never trailed in a first set of dominance, leading 14-3 before the Tribe recorded its first kill. Charleston's defensive energy made life hard for the home team as CofC recorded 25 digs and held William & Mary to just three kills and seven errors (-.108). Dorton finished with six kills and six digs as CofC tied its largest margin of victory in a set this year, 25-10.

William & Mary had enough of Charleston's unyielding ways in the first, exerting great energy to build a 14-10 advantage in the second set, more than doubling their kill output with seven early kills. But Charleston responded with rapacious desire on the backline, digging nearly every ball and going on a 15-2 run to win the set, 25-16.

The Tribe started the third set well again, opening a 12-11 lead. But Charleston rallied to go up 20-14 and eventually win 25-20. Grace Rebarchak and Maddie Hills played well in the middle as the Cougars salted away their first sweep of conference play.

College of Charleston will play its final match of the long road trip this Friday at UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m.
