Cougars Fall in SoCon Tournament Quarterfinals to Mountaineers, 74-60

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Nine different players scored for the College of Charleston women's basketball team, but the Cougars fell against Appalachian State, 74-60, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament at Kimmel Arena on Saturday.
Junior Alyssa Frye led the Cougars (15-15, 11-9) with 12 points and senior Latisha Harris added 11 points and seven rebounds. Senior Cathryn Hardy scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds and junior point guard Jillian Brown tallied eight assists.
With her eight assists Brown moved sixth-place on the Southern Conference all-time single season assist record list and now has 189. Also making SoCon history was Frye, as she connected on three field goals from beyond the three-point arc to move into sixth-place on the SoCon single season three-point record list and now has 86 for the season.
With her four offensive rebounds Hardy brought her total to 112 on the season which is now third on the CofC DI single season record list. Hardy also moved into third on the Cougars DI career offensive rebound list and now has 268 offensive rebounds for her career.
Appalachian State (20-9, 13-7) moves on to the semifinals, where they will play Chattanooga, who beat Georgia Southern earlier today.
The Mountaineers led by as many of nine points in the first half, but after going up nine, freshman Shannon Hines, who scored seven points in the first period connected on a three-pointer with 43 second left in the half to bring the Cougars within six at 34-28 going into halftime.
Appalachian State scored the first points of the second half and led 38-30, but then the Cougars used a 12-4 run to tie the game at 42-42 with 12:22 left to go.
In the next four minutes Appalachian State, who shot 49 percent from the field in the game went on a 15-7 to go up eight at 57-49. Once again the Cougars did not quit and got within three at 59-56 on a Jazz Green jump shot.
The Cougars would not get any closer as Appalachian State used a 7-0 run to go up double digit at 66-56 with 2:57 to go. The Mountaineers knocked down their last six free-throws to secure the victory.

“This is a group of young women that pulled together from day one, and we set out to be better, and we were. We've accomplished so many things, and again, it was a great basketball game, I thought two teams competed. We turned over the ball and there were key rebounds and some empty possessions. It wasn't a lack of effort or lack of want-to. My hat goes off to Darcie's (Vincent) program; they shot the ball almost perfect tonight. Again, my kids are resilient, I wanted this for them. I know their hearts are heavy right now, but they don't have anything to hang their heads on. They earned respect from a whole lot of people who didn't think they would make it this far.”

“Our season was phenomenal. They picked us 10th and we finished fifth. With a group of girls that have never been here, no one on this team has ever made it past the first round and now they have. With anything, you grow, you learn from it and aspire to be better, and that's what we'll do.”

“Looking back on the season, it was an experience I'll never forget. The team, the chemistry we had. It was amazing. The coaches pushed us to a level we've never been pushed to before. Everyone stepped up more than they ever stepped up the whole season. I'm so impressed with everyone. It was fun, and it was hard work, though, that's for sure. I wish the girls the best of luck next season I think that they have a great season and that they can continue to do amazing things. I hope in the CAA (Colonial Athletic Association), they can do good. As far as this season goes, it's been fun and a lot of work. I know we lost, but I'm proud of us.”
