ATHENS, Ga. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team was tagged with a 5-1 loss to Georgia at the UGA Soccer complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars possessed well and created scoring chances, but the Bulldogs were much more opportunistic. UGA freshman Marion Crowder scored the first four goals of the game and Bella Hartley added the fifth to give the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead in the 60th minute.
CofC (2-6 overall) picked up a 78th minute goal when Victoria Fichman (Matthews, N.C.) earned a foul in the penalty area and McCallie Jones (Charlotte, N.C.) cashed in on the penalty kick for her team-high third goal of the season.
“We were excited to come play a very good Georgia team who I think is going to do very well in the SEC,” said head coach Christian Michner. “We had a very strong non-conference schedule and we knew that we had our work cut out for us.
“There were a lot of really good things that happened for us today. Our movement of the ball was very good… the possession stats were pretty even… our pass completion percentage was very good. But at the end of the day, we made some critical mistakes in areas where you just can't and teams at this level will punish you for it.”
The Cougars have one final non-conference tune-up against UNC Charlotte before getting a fresh start with the opening of the Colonial Athletic Association season. The Cougars challenge the 49ers on the road on Friday, Sept. 20 with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
The CAA season opens at home when the Cougars square off with Northeastern on Friday, Sept. 27 at Patriots Point.
