TOWSON, Md. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team earned a critical point in the Colonial Athletic Association standings by stretching a scoreless affair 110 minutes to draw, nil-nil, with Towson at Tiger Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Charleston (5-9-1, 1-4-1 CAA) remains in the thick of the postseason hunt with the draw, as the Cougars stay within one win of one of six CAA Championship bids with three regular season matches left on the schedule.
The Cougar defense bent but didn't break as CofC weathered a 28-6 Towson shot advantage on the afternoon with a well-organized backline of Claire Newman, Allison Sender, Hope Walker and Rio Speller-Drews, all of whom played all 110 minutes.
Two days removed from a then-career high 12 saves against James Madison on Friday, goalkeeper Lauren Killian exceeded that effort and kept the Cougars on level pegging with 15 saves on Sunday.
“It was a really hard-fought match with both teams playing as hard as they could for 110 minutes,” said head coach Christian Michner. “It was a good performance by both teams, creating chances and getting forward. Lauren Killian was unbelievable today and made a lot of great saves. Frankly, we defended really well as an entire team overall.
“Our mentality and effort were very good. We're learning to put things together on the road. It's not easy in this league to pick up a valuable point on the road, so I'm really proud of the girls for working their socks off. Now we're excited to get back to Charleston and finish out the regular season.”
Charleston returns home and continues its playoff hunt by playing host to Hofstra and Northeastern at Patriots Point next weekend. The Cougars will welcome the Pride on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. and the Huskies on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.
The regular season finale will be against UNC Wilmington on Sunday, Oct. 26 at Patriots Point.
