CARY, N.C. – College of Charleston men's tennis players Charlie Ghriskey, Zack Lewis and Garrett Gordon all advanced past the opening round of competition on Thursday at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships, hosted by Duke University at the Cary Tennis Park.
Competing against the best collegiate players in the Carolinas – one of the most talented regions in the country – it was Lewis who got things started for The College with a comprehensive, 6-0, 6-4 dismissal of Charlotte's Nate Shanock. Ghriskey then followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Bret Caban of North Carolina A&T before Garrett Gordon downed Princeton Perry, also of North Carolina A&T, to send three Cougars in to the tournament's second stage.
In the consolation bracket, returning all-conference selection Rodrigo Encinas and newcomer Vasily Kichigin both bounced back from opening round defeats to win their second match. Encinas defeated North Carolina's Connor Daly 7-5, 6-1 before Kichigin – a native of Saint Petersburg, Russia – defeated East Carolina's Damien Bernard in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
"It was a good first day," said head coach Jay Bruner. "We're playing against some very high-level opponents so to have three advance on day one is a positive. We'll hope to carry these performances over as we begin doubles play on Friday."
