CHAPEL HILL N.C. – College of Charleston women's tennis wrapped up play on Friday at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships, an event hosted by the University of North Carolina.
Playing against some of the highest-level collegiate competition in the country, it was sophomore Mara Argyriou and junior Katherine Schofield who took to the court in maroon and white, representing Charleston against the best the Carolinas Region has to offer.
Both Argyriou and Schofield played well on Saturday, each forcing their match to three sets, but were eventually unable to overcome stiff competition at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. It was Schofield, a native of Franklin, Tenn., who got thing started for The College, winning the second set 6-2 to force a third against Wake Forest's Samantha Asch. Schofield was unable to pick the lock in the third set, however, eventually falling 6-4; 2-6; 6-4 to the redshirt sophomore. Argyriou stepped up next for CofC, also pushing her opponent – North Carolina State's Liza Fieldsend – to a third frame, but was unable to pull out the third set tiebreak, losing 6-0;4-6;7-6(1).
“I'm proud of the way the Mara and Katherine played,” said College of Charleston Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo. “They did a good job of implementing the things we've been working on in practice and while I know they will be disappointed in the losses, I'm very pleased with the way they played here in Chapel Hill.”
Next up for the Cougars is the home-hosted CofC Fall Invitational, Nov 7-8, at the College of Charleston Tennis Complex. Also participating in the festivities will be the University of Georgia, Georgia State and Marshall.
