ORANGEBURG, S.C. –The College of Charleston women's soccer team dominated South Carolina State in non-conference action on Wednesday night at Bulldog Field, claiming a 4-0 result.
After kickoff was delayed over two hours, the Cougars' (6-11-1) rejuvenated offense created a 25-6 shot advantage on the evening.
“When we don't typically play midweek games, it was good to get back in the mix and score some quality goals,” said head coach Christian Michner. “I'm proud of how the girls went out with the right attitude and got the job done tonight.”
Charleston first scored in the 17th minute, when junior Nicole Koretsky bent a corner kick into the box and freshman Tracey Webster headed the ball home for the second goal of her young career.
That was the only goal before the halftime intermission, but CofC dominated the second 45 minutes to the tune of an 18-3 second-half shot advantage.
In the 75th minute, the Cougars found the goal again with Sarah Blakely picking up an assist on junior Claire Newman's goal, giving the Cougars a 2-0 advantage.
Just over 10 minutes later, Koretsky picked up her second assist of the night when she sent another corner kick into the box and Blakely headed the effort home, putting the Cougars up 3-0.
In the 90th minute, Koretsky was the benefactor of a ball sent in by freshman Mary Kate Bowers and tucked in CofC's fourth goal of the night, matching Charleston's season high.
The Cougars return to Colonial Athletic Association action with their final match of the season when they play host to UNC Wilmington at Patriots Point on Sunday, Oct. 26. The match will serve as Cougar Senior Day, with the careers of Sarah Cardamone and Taylor Avery being commemorated before the 1 p.m. kickoff.
“We're excited about Senior Day on Sunday and the great coastal rivalry we are developing with UNCW,” said Michner. “Our players are working hard and expecting to end the season on a high note.”
