CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite having three players in double figures and forcing 21 turnovers, the College of Charleston women's basketball team fell on Sunday, 60-51, to in-state rivals South Carolina State at the SHM Memorial Center.
Often the better team, the Cougars managed 34 points in the paint and won the battle on the glass, but were eventually undone by their inability to handle the Bulldogs defensive energy, giving away a season-high 25 turnovers. Continuing their recent string of strong offensive performances, Bre Bolden and Erin Hall each registered 15 points to lead all scorers, while senior forward Christy Hewatt also chipped in with 12 of her own.
In a frenetic first half of play highlighted by seven lead changes, the Cougars (1-9) hung tough early, edging their way to an 11-10 lead following a free throw from senior guard Breannah Davis-Bloom. Despite the back and forth action, it was the hosts who soon managed to separate themselves, riding a 10-2 run midway through the stanza to take a 20-13 lead with 7:51 to go. The Cougars continued to fight and battle on the boards, but were eventually undone by 18 turnovers as the Bulldogs extended their advantage to 21 at the halftime break, 41-20.
It was an inspired second half display from The College as the Cougars scored nine straight to open the half, cutting the host's lead to just 12, 41-29 with 17:56 left in the game. Shooting over 60% for much of the second frame, the Cougars continued to claw in to the Bulldog's lead, coming within 10 following a basket from freshman point guard Shiclasia Brown. However, South Carolina State held tough and the Cougars could get no closer than eight, eventually falling 60-51.
Up next for the Cougars is a home showdown with USC Upstate on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at TD Arena, where tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. In their last outing on John Kresse Court, the Cougars downed Mercer, 72-59.
