Women?s Tennis Falls At Home to No. 25 Fighting Irish

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – In the first match of a jam-packed three day schedule, the College of Charleston women's tennis team fell to the No. 25-ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, 7-0, at the College of Charleston tennis complex on Tuesday afternoon.
“Notre Dame is a very good team,” said College of Charleston director of tennis Angelo Anastopoulo. “They jumped out to an early lead, and even though we fought back and competed well, we just weren't able to capitalize on some opportunities and ended up falling to one of the best teams in the nation. I'm proud of the way we competed – we won't dwell.”
The Irish were strong from the outset, quickly claiming the doubles point thanks to the Notre Dame pairings of Jen Kellner and Sabacinski as well as Fennelly and Robinson who downed their Cougars opposition on courts two and three, 8-0 and 8-3, respectively.
In singles, the Cougars came storming back. Taking the first set in three of the six matches, The College then pressed the issue further when Kelly Kambourelis forced returning BIG EAST Player of the Year Brittany Saunders to a first set tie-break. Yet it was not to be as Saunders squeezed out the set and Notre Dame cruised on all six courts the rest of the way to claim their seventh win of the season.

Scouting the Golden Eagles:
Six of seven student-athletes on the Southern Miss roster are freshman, meaning the Golden Eagles boast one of the youngest teams in the country. Despite their youth, the Hattiesburg based outfit is 4-9 on the season with quality wins over SIUE and New Orleans, as well and Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Most recently, the Golden Eagles lost to CofC local LowCountry rivals Charleston Southern, 7-0, on Tuesday afternoon. Southern Miss is led by first year head coach Dominic Modise.
Scouting the Tarheels:
The No. 6-ranked Tarheels are once again loaded with talent this season, including the No. 1-ranked singles player in the country, freshman, Jamie Loeb. In total, the Tarheels are comprised of four ranked singles players (No. 1, No. 5, No. 41 and No. 111) as well as three ranked doubles teams (No. 7, No. 15 and No. 52.) The Tarheels are led by 11th-year head coach Brian Kalbas, who throughout his tenure in Chapel Hill has racked up 8 conference coach of the year nods and 16 all-Americans en route to 451 career victories.
COACHES CORNER: College of Charleston Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo
On facing two tough teams at home on Wednesday…
“Two very good teams tomorrow. Southern Miss is a young group, completely revamped from last season – so we're not really sure what to expect. In North Carolina, you have one of the best programs in the country, currently ranked No. 6, with the top player in the nation on court one and the No. 5-ranked singles player on court two. Most teams like to schedule double-headers against lesser talent – and maybe this will be a learning experience for us – but we don't back away from anything, especially not on home court. We'll do our best.”
