Women?s Tennis Splits Home Double-Header
3/13/2014 3:56:00 AM | Women's Tennis
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – In a grueling home double-header, the College of Charleston women's tennis team took down the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss, 4-3, in exciting fashion before falling 7-0, to the No. 6-ranked University of North Carolina Tarheels on Wednesday at the CofC Tennis Complex at Patriots Point.
In the opening match of the day, The College got off to a slow start, losing the doubles point despite a good win on court three from the Cougar pairing of Samantha Maddox and Jamie Harrell.
The Cougars quickly closed the gap in singles however, as Maddox and Katherine Schofield both downed their Golden Eagle opposition on court three and four, 6-0, 6-1, while Jenny Falcone dismissed Alex Kitchen, 6-2, 6-4 on court six. Despite Brooke McAmis having to pull out of her match on court one due to a migraine headache, freshman Cypriot Mara Argyriou came up huge for the Cougars on court 2, closing out the match for CofC with an impressive 7-5, 6-1 victory over Mahitha Dadireddy.
“It was a great match and we played some really good doubles against Southern Miss,” said College of Charleston director of tennis Angelo Anastopoulo. “We came up a little short in the doubles point, but I was very pleased with the way we played and how we competed. Mara Argyriou really came into her own today. She was put in a pressure situation when Brooke McAmis had to retire with a severe migraine headache at No. 1 singles. It put pressure on Mara to come up big to win for us and clinch the match. She looked like a veteran out there. She is really starting to show the talent that we have expected from her.”
Facing a quick turnaround and little rest, the Cougars then faced the No. 6-ranked team in the country, the University of North Carolina Tarheels. Boasting four ranked singles players and three nationally ranked doubles tandems, the highly favored Tarheels were given a good fight by the previously ranked Cougars.
In doubles play, the College – despite playing well – fell on courts one and three, handing the Tarheels an early 1-0 lead.
In singles, the No. 1-ranked player in the country, Jamie Loeb easily downed recent CAA women's tennis player of the week, Kelly Kambourelis, while Jenny Falcone fell to Laura Slater 6-0, 6-1 to put UNC on the brink of clinching. Clinch they did, when No. 5-ranked Hayley Carter wore down McAmis on court two, to give the Tarheels their 15th win of the season.
“North Carolina only gets to play three to four out-of-conference matches,” said Anastopoulo. “It was their choice of where to travel to for spring break and their seniors chose to come to Charleston. We were honored to host them. UNC's Jamie Loeb is the No. 1 player in the country and proved that she was. She took it to Kelly (Kambourelis) who has been playing some really good tennis for us. She played a great match. In some spots, we really held our own and we fought hard. We did better than what we did against Notre Dame on Tuesday night. Mara (Argyriou) played another great match – four matches in one day. The main reason we play so many is to make this stretch as tough as it can be to prepare us for conference tournament time where we hope to play three matches in a row.”
