WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The No. 2 seed College of Charleston women's tennis team swept the Tigers of Towson University on Friday, 4-0, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center to advance to the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Tennis Championships.
“We handled the early tournament nerves very well today,” said College of Charleston director of tennis Angelo Anastopoulo. “We played aggressively throughout match today, which was important. It was a very cold evening and I think playing under the lights was a difficult experience for both teams. Mara (Argyriou) looked like a veteran today. Senior Kelly Kambourelis is really doing a great job of helping Mara deal with the pressures of tournament play. For Towson, I think Head Coach Doug Neagle is doing a great job with the program and in the month since the last time we played, they have improved greatly. We had to be at our best today.”
The Cougars (17-7) turned in another impressive performance against the Tigers, claiming their 11th win in the past 12 matches.
In doubles, the Cougars' court two duo of Kelly Kambourelis and Mara Argyriou posted an 8-1 victory over Nisha Shah and Sophie Lesage before the court one team of Jenny Falcone and Katherine Schofield quickly followed with an 8-1 triumph against Nani Lizana and Ariel Burke to earn the first point.
In singles play, CofC got wins from its top three players to wrap up the match. Brooke McAmis rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ayana Dow at No. 2 and Kambourelis was also a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Lizana on court one. The clinching point came on court three where Argyriou defeated Lorena Ferrer, 6-0, 6-2.
Next up for the Cougars is a semifinal showdown against the No. 3 seed College of William and Mary, with doubles play set to begin at 2 p.m.
“William and Mary is an incredible team,” said Anastopoulo. “We are certainly not deceived by their season record and we will enter the match as underdogs – especially considering that they are playing on their home court. To win the match, we will have to be at our very best.”
