MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – After early morning delays due to inclement weather, College of Charleston senior Jenny Falcone took home two titles on Saturday during the final day of the 14th annual CofC Invitational.
Falcone kick started her memorable day by teaming up with teammates Helena Nyikos and Grace Baker in the morning to win the A2 doubles flight championship. Playing as a triumvirate in order to accommodate to class schedules, the threesome downed fellow CofC teammates Sara Jane Jones and Brooke McAmis in an all Cougar final.
With a title already under her belt and the sun beginning to show, Falcone then turned her sights to the day's biggest match, an afternoon showdown with Coastal Carolina's Cari Berry for the B1 singles championship. Berry kept the match close early, but buoyed by a boisterous home crowd, Falcone turned up the heat on her regional rival and swung her way to a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
"I'm really proud of Jenny," said College of Charleston Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo. "She has been working on some things during practice that she did a great job of implementing in to her game this weekend. What a great way to finish her fourth and final CofC Invitational."
Also performing well for The College on Saturday was the doubles pairing of 2013 tournament champion Katherine Schofield and senior standout Samantha Maddox. After defeating the UNC Wilmington tandem of Sillanpaa and Kharkevitch, 8-6, yesterday to reach the semifinals, Maddox and Schofield fought their way in to the finals of the top doubles flight with an exciting 8-7 (5) victory over the Coastal Carolina duo of Babayan and Bondar late Saturday morning. Despite playing well, Maddox and Schofield then fell in the final to Samford's Northcutt and Cabellero, 8-5.
Also playing in a final was senior Grace Baker, in the B2 singles flight, where she was downed by Samford's Savannah Wood, 6-4, 6-1.
"This part of the year, were not so concerned about wins and losses, but rather trying to do the right things on the court," said Anastopoulo. "We want to work on the fundamental skills that will help us in the spring, like getting our opponents out of position and being mentally tough. At this point, I would rather see us lose doing the right thing than win doing the wrong thing. It's all about taking the lessons we've been working on in practice, becoming more proficient and applying them in a competitive environment. This weekend, I think we did just that."
Next up for the Cougars is a trip to the ITA Regional Championships on Thursday, Oct. 16 in Chapel Hill N.C.
