NEWARK, Del. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team suffered a 4-1 defeat to Delaware in Colonial Athletic Associate play at Grant Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars (4-7-0, 0-2-0 CAA) weathered a 26-shot Delaware offensive, anchored by goalkeepers Lauren Killian and Taylor Avery who combined for 13 saves in the contest.
The Blue Hens improve to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in CAA play with the result.
“Delaware is a very good team,” said head coach Christian Michner. “They fought hard for 90 minutes and earned this result. We played well, but the difference was that they made things happen while we reacted to what they were doing. It's going to be tough to compete when you're the reactive team.
“The bottom line is that our focus and mentality have to tougher. In order for us to compete, we have to sort some things out. We are playing well, but learning some harsh lessons.”
The Delaware attack produced three first half goals off the boots of Michelle McEnroe, Andrea Gunderson and Abby Thomas. In the 77th minute, Mary Aleixo netted a goal to push the lead to 4-0.
CofC got on the board in the 84th minute when junior Nicole Koretsky buried a free kick from 20 yards away. The goal was her first of the season.
The Cougars return to Patriots Point next weekend by playing host to Elon and William and Mary in CAA play. Charleston challenges the Phoenix on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. and the Tribe on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
