HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – College of Charleston women's tennis fell to the Thundering Herd, 6-1, on Saturday in the team's season opener.
Despite the loss, the Cougars (0-1) showed signs of strength in both singles and doubles action at the Huntington Tennis Club. Junior Katherine Schofield and senior Jenny Falcone tied the doubles competition at 1-1 after defeating sophomore pair Derya Turhan and Anna Pomyatinskaya in a tight 7-5 match on court one. The Herd would eventually clinch the doubles point when Rachael Morales and Maddie Silver earned a narrow 7-5 victory over junior Brooke McAmis and sophomore Mara Argyriou in the No. 2 spot.
“It would have been easy for our team to come out flat after traveling 600 miles yesterday, but they didn't and they didn't look for excuses,” head coach Angelo Anastopoulo said. “With the amount of preparation we had for our first match indoors, I was really pleased with the way the girls played, especially early on in the match. We had good starts in our matches.”
In singles action, Falcone put Charleston on the board with a marathon 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-3), 10-5 win over Marija Bogicevic in the fourth spot. Senior Samantha Maddox held a 5-2 lead over Turhan, who is ranked 116th in the nation in singles, before eventually yielding a 7-5, 6-1 on court one. Senior Grace Baker also gave Morales some trouble at the No. 6 spot, forcing a tiebreaker situation with a final score of 6-2, 5-7, 10-8.
Anastopoulo, who went out of his way to schedule his four of his first five matches on indoor courts, felt that the match gave his team a chance to familiarize themselves with the speed of play on an indoor court – something the team doesn't have a chance to do in Charleston.
“In the Southern Conference, tennis was an outdoor sport,” Anastopoulo said. “The move to the CAA brings indoor matches into consideration. It's important to schedule as many matches as we can so that we have the experience for conference matches, when we travel to William and Mary or James Madison.
CofC women's tennis will gain more experience on indoor courts when it faces No. 29 Kentucky on Sunday in Lexington, Ky. Match begins at 10 am ET.
