WILMINGTON, N.C. – Behind Hamilton Carlin's game-winning goal in the 82nd minute, the College of Charleston men's soccer team defeated UNCW 1-0 Wednesday night at UNCW Soccer Field.
“It was a great win, everyone fought hard and we got another clean sheet on the road,” said junior forward Hamilton Carlin. “We hope to carry this momentum into the Elon game this weekend and give ourselves the best possible positioning for the CAA tournament.”
The Cougars (7-6-2, 4-2-1 CAA) move into prime position to earn home-field advantage for the CAA quarterfinals after the win. CofC will move into fourth place in the standings while UNCW (8-6-2, 3-4-1 CAA) drop to fifth. Hofstra has locked up the No. 1 seed and will host the semifinals and finals of the CAA Men's Soccer Championship for the first time on Nov. 13 and 15.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first half with UNCW maintaining a 7-5 advantage in shots. Junior goalkeeper Kevin Shields, who made five saves on the night, was impressive in his fourth shutout of the season.
Junior Hamilton Carlin broke the scoring drought with a goal in the 82nd minute on an assist from senior midfielder Adam Purvis with eight minutes to go. The pair had the game-winning goal and assist in the Cougars upset over No. 22 Hofstra two weeks ago. Carlin is now tied with sophomore defender Leland Archer for second on the team in goals with three.
CofC has four shutouts in its last seven games against conference opponents. Four CAA wins this season are the most by the Cougars since joining the conference in 2013.
The College will close out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 31 against No. 21 Elon (12-4, 5-2 CAA) at 7 p.m.
