CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston women's tennis fell short in its home opener as No. 67 Winthrop picked up a 5-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point Tennis Center.
The Eagles (1-3) showed up a player short, which resulted in forfeits at the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles spots. Charleston lost the advantage when Winthrop won both doubles matches to tie the score at 1-1.
The Cougars showed some life in singles, pushing four out of the five matches to a third set. Freshman Helena Nyikos won the lone match for the Cougars, battling back after narrowly losing the first set to win back-to-back 6-3, 6-4 decisions.
“We put ourselves in a position to win today by pushing four of the five singles matches into a third set and that's all a coach can hope for,” head coach Angelo Anastopoulo said. “Winthrop deserves a lot of credit for the fight they showed today in winning three out of four of those matches in three sets.”
On the first court, senior Samantha Maddox battled it out with Winthrop's top player, Alice Garcia. After Maddox won the tie break to take a 7-6 lead in the first set, Garcia came back with repeat 6-2 performances to claim the match.
Third-seeded junior Katherine Schofield rebounded from a 6-3 loss in the first set as to shut out Tijana Uzelac, 6-0, in the second set Uzelac rallied with a 6-3 victory in the third set to boost the Eagles lead to 3-1.
Senior Jenny Falcone rallied from a 6-2 loss in the first set as the No. 4 seed. She pushed opponent Mariana Humberg to a tiebreak, which she won 7-5 to claim the second set before eventually ceding the match with a 6-3 third set loss.
“I feel like seeing a lot of my teammates come back and win their first or second sts gave me the momentum I needed to push through and win that second set,” Falcone said. “Each day we are learning more and more to fight and it's good to take a positive out of a loss.”
College of Charleston (0-4) travels to Columbia, S.C. on Feb. 14 for a 3 pm match with No. 21 South Carolina.
