
Women?s Hoops Falls to Towson, 79-70

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – Towson forward LaTorri Hines-Allen scored 26 points and added 11 rebounds to lead the eighth-seeded Tigers to a 79-70 victory over ninth-seeded College of Charleston in the opening game of the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Basketball Championship at the Show Place Arena on Thursday afternoon.
The Tigers (11-20), who earned their first CAA Tournament win since 2009, will advance to face top-seeded and defending CAA champion James Madison University in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the Cougars' season comes to an end with a 5-25 record.
After battling to a 35-33 lead in the first half, the Tigers opened the second stanza by scoring 16 of the first 22 points, including nine points from senior guard Ciara Webb, to extend their advantage to 51-31 with 14:20 remaining.
Charleston trimmed the deficit to 59-54 with 7:09 left before the Tigers went on a 12-5 run, including eight free throws, to take a 71-59 lead with 1:39 remaining they did not relinquish.
The Cougars sprinted out to an 18-8 advantage in the opening seven minutes of the first half before Towson scored 14 of the next 16 points to take a 22-20 lead on a three-point field goal by junior guard Dominique Johnson with 7:21 remaining.
However, Charleston answered with a 9-2 spurt, including six points from CAA Defensive Player of the Year Breanna Bolden, to reclaim the edge at 29-24 with 4:49 remaining in the opening stanza.
The Tigers countered by using a 13-4 run over the next four minutes to take a 35-31 lead on a jumper by Hines-Allen with 24 seconds left. A pair of free throws by Bolden with six seconds remaining narrowed the margin to 35-33 at the intermission.
Hines-Allen, who posted her 14th double-double of the season, made 10 of 22 shots from the floor in addition to a 6-for-10 effort from the foul line. The first team All-CAA selection also added three assists and two steals.
Webb added 18 points with six rebounds while Johnson came off the bench to contribute 16 points, including a 10-for-13 effort from the free throw line.
Bolden scored a game-high 28 points in the loss for Charleston, making 9 of 13 field goal attempts and 10 of 13 free throws. Senior guard Erin Hall added 12 points with five rebounds and three assists for the Cougars.
