
Men?s Tennis Hands Navy 6-1 Loss in Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – College of Charleston men's tennis handed Navy just its second loss in 12 home matches with a 6-1 victory over the Midshipmen on Monday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
The Cougars (6-3) joins Old Dominion as the only teams to beat the 10-3 Mids on their home courts. Navy also lost a 7-0 decision to nationally ranked UNC Wilmington in North Carolina on Feb. 14.
Charleston clinched the doubles point with wins in three tight matches. Senior Brice Allanic and sophomore Franz Sydow got the ball rolling with an 8-6 victory in the top doubles spot, defeating Blake Daniel and Calvin Mark. Second-seeded Charlie Ghriskey and Vasily Kichigin picked up an 8-4 win over Thomas Pecor and Aries Wong to clinch the doubles point for the Cougars. On the third court, senior Josh Record and sophomore Rodrigo Encinas faced tough competition from Krishna Jana and Walker Sims, emerging victorious in a the tiebreak with a score of 9-8(10-8) to give Charleston the sweep in doubles.
The tight competition carried through to singles competition where Mark evened the score at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over CofC's Encincas at the top spot. Allanic defeated his competition on court two to give the Cougars the edge again. Junior Zack Lewis picked up his fourth singles win of the season at the No. 5 spot with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Wong. Kichigin's 6-4, 6-2 win over Sims at the fourth spot gave Charleston a 4-1 advantage and clinched the match.
At the No. 6 spot, junior Garrett Gordon bounced back from a 6-2 loss in the first set to capture the next two sets 6-2, 6-1 for his third straight win in singles action. Ghriskey finished up the day with a hard fought 7-6(7-5), 4-6, 1-0 (13-11) win on court three to extend his singles win streak to four.
CofC will look to ride the momentum of this win into Tuesday morning's makeup match with Coppin State. The 10 a.m. match will take place at the Baltimore Fitness and Tennis Center, an indoor facility just eight miles from CSU's main campus.
