CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston men's tennis continued its winning tradition over crosstown rival and old conference foe The Citadel with a 6-1 victory over the Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (12-8, 1-1 CAA) have won seven straight matches against The Citadel. The team has only lost once under head coach Jay Bruner's eight-year tenure, a 4-3 loss in 2008, Bruner's first year at the helm.
Seniors Brice Allanic and Alon Faiman secured wins in singles and doubles in their last match at Patriots Point. The top-seeded duo clinched the doubles point for CofC with an 8-6 victory over The Citadel's Peter Bleach and Artemie Amari on court one. Charleston also picked up wins on courts two to sweep the doubles matches.
Junior Zack Lewis and Faiman quickly increased College of Charleston's lead to 3-0 with wins at the No. 5 and 6 spots, respectively. Neither player dropped a single game to their Bulldog opponents. Faiman moved to 3-2 on the year while picking up his 76 career victory (singles and doubles). Lewis, who has won six of his last seven matches moved to 13-5 on the year, playing primarily as a fifth seed.
Charlie Ghriskey, who is academically a senior but announced Monday that he would return to Charleston for another year, clinched the match for the Cougars with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Oliver Dedding in the No. 3 position. The Mount Kisco, N.Y. native leads the team with 14 singles wins this year.
Allanic and sophomore Vasily Kichigin also added to their win totals with two-set victories on courts one and four. Allanic's win was the eighteenth of his career as the Cougars' top seed and 32nd overall singles victory. He now sits at 62 career victories in singles and doubles.
The Citadel (2- 22) was able to get on the board late in the match. Freshman Artemie Amari picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot to keep the Bulldogs from being shut out.
The Cougars hit the road for one final conference tune-up against the Dukes of James Madison before the CAA Championships in Williamsburg on April 16-19. CofC will take the courts at noon on Saturday in Harrisonburg, Va.
